Introduction & Historical Legacy
Located near the quiet hamlet of Gaurkamath (near Vadap) in Karjat, Bhivgad Fort (also widely known as Bhimgad / भीमगड) is a fascinating, historic hill fort famed for its unique rock-cut architecture. Rising like a modest natural fortress, the hill is steeped in local folklore connecting it to the legendary Pandava prince Bhima, and later served as a vital regional surveillance and defensive outpost for Maratha military units.
What sets Bhivgad apart is its remarkable subterranean engineering: deep underground water reservoirs (Bhuyari Take / भुयारी टाके) carved directly into solid basalt rock, paired with carved meditation caves and natural fortification walls.
