Commanding the strategic passes between the Konkan coast and the Sahyadri highlands, Karjat was a vital theater of Maratha military architecture during the reigns of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Peshwas. Forts like Kothaligad (Peth), Peb (Vikatgad), Sondai, Songiri, and Rajmachi served as sentinel watchtowers, granaries, and defensive citadels guarding the high-traffic Bor Ghat trade corridors.
Today, these mountain strongholds are among Maharashtra's most celebrated trekking trails, offering everything from relaxed beginner day-hikes with iron ladder climbs to high-ridge scrambles through mist-wrapped cliffs and centuries-old rock water cisterns.

Sondai Fort is the easiest trek near Karjat. Starting from Sondewadi village (near Morbe Dam), the trail ascends through gentle shaded forest trails with steel ladder installations over rocky sections, taking only about 45 to 60 minutes to reach the summit.
The trek takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours from Ambivali village up to the plateau of Peth village, followed by a 45-minute climb through the rock-cut cannon room and internal spiral staircase to the pinnacle top.
Well-marked trails like Sondai and Songiri do not require guides. However, longer ridge treks such as Peb Fort or technical paths with multiple jungle bifurcations benefit greatly from hiring local village guides.
