Introduction & Historical Significance
Rising prominently over the Karjat plains, Sondai Fort (सोंडाई किल्ला) is an ancient hill fort and watchtower standing at an elevation of approximately 1,200 feet above sea level. Located just 9 km from Karjat railway station near Sondewadi village, it served as a strategic military outpost during the era of the Maratha Empire.
Unlike sprawling residential forts, Sondai functioned primarily as a watchtower (chowki). Its high, isolated rock pinnacle provided sentries an unhindered 360-degree vantage point to monitor vital trade passages, supervise troop movements between Karjat, Panvel, and the Bhor Ghat trade route, and watch over what is today the vast Morbe Dam reservoir.
Trek Route & Trail Overview
The trek to Sondai Fort is widely considered one of the most rewarding and beginner-friendly hikes in the Karjat region:
Base Village: Sondewadi
The trek begins at Sondewadi village (or Borgaon). The initial trail winds gently through village fields, open grassland plateaus, and forested paths before reaching the rock mass.
Duration & Difficulty
Easy to Moderate (1.5 to 2 hours climb): Clear, well-trodden paths make navigation straightforward for first-time trekkers and families.
Steel Ladder Climbs to the Summit
As you near the topmost rock face, sturdy iron/steel ladders bolted directly into the basalt rock allow trekkers to safely negotiate the steep vertical rock patches. These ladders make the final climb both thrilling and secure.
Key Highlights at the Summit
Sondai Devi Shrine
At the very apex stands a revered carved idol of deity Sondai Devi beneath a sacred tree, where local villagers offer prayers during festivals.
Rock-Cut Water Cisterns
Two large ancient water cisterns carved deeply into the mountain rock. These provided potable drinking water to garrisons stationed at the outpost.
