Introduction & Historical Significance
Perched atop a rugged conical hill near Palasdari in the Karjat region, Songiri Fort (सोनगिरी किल्ला) is a lesser-known yet historically vital Maratha watchtower hill fort. Standing sentinel over the ancient Bor Ghat trade passage, this compact military outpost was designed to guard the communication routes between the Konkan coast and the Deccan highlands.
Because of its commanding 360-degree line of sight, sentinels stationed on Songiri could quickly signal neighboring bastions like Rajmachi, Sondai, and Irshalgad. Today, Songiri has become an increasingly popular half-day trek for hikers, offering a blend of dense forest trails, rock steps, ancient water cisterns, and stunning valley overlooks.
